Eric Carle Animals

Preps were inspired by Eric Carle's "Animals Animals"

Day 1: Looked at pictures from Animals Animals and talked about what they saw. Students commented on the multicoloured paper and the cut out shapes (like a collage). We used acrylic paint on recycled paper. Students used texture tools and different colours of paint to create a rough texture. We also had a table set up for spattering paper. Kids loved it!

Day 2: We talked about the shapes we saw in a couple of animals and images in nature. Students carefully cut out shapes and glued their shapes to a background. Students were not allowed to draw on their background and if they wanted to draw their shapes out before cutting, they used the back of the paper. Students did an amazing job of creating beautiful collages. So creative! This year, I allowed students to use a hole puncher for eyes and little details. My favourite lesson this year so far.

Year 3 Foam Relief Prints

I saw this art lesson on www.artforsmallhands.blogspot.com and fell in love with it.

Students planned their background and image(s) to be drawn into foam on a planning sheet. Students did really well making sure their tissue paper was glued down properly. Students ran into a few problems when printing their foam as prints were smudged, broken or too detailed. Overall, students did an amazing job and all of their prints/collages are really special! Love it.

Prep Collages

Preps were inspired by the book "Elmer the Patchwork Elephant"

Day 1: Our Magic Word for the week was collage. First Preps drew out a simple animal and then filled it in with cut up paper. I gave out scissors so they could cut the paper to fit a certain shape. Students worked really hard on placing the paper to fit in the shape.

Day 2: After students filled their animal with paper, students decorated their animal with small shapes. Preps LOVE shiny paper. I was pleasantly surprised how well students cut and pasted on their paper!!!

A boy had been working on his tentacles for a while and I asked him why it was taking so long to do his work. He replied happily "I didn't take off my glue lid so my paper didn't stick"... I took him a minute to glue on the orange pieces after he took off the lid. ADORABLE!

Year 5 and 6 Pieces

Year 5s and 6s are still working hard on their projects.

This week I found a broken pencil with hot glue on it stashed under a table... Looks like my students will need a refresher on how to treat the materials in the Art Room.
