Year 1 Fantasy Places!

I was dying to try out my new tempera paint and what better way to use it with my lovely Year 1s. They painted paper using warm and cool colours and were asked to create a fantasy place! We focused on careful shape and nice layering.

Year 1 Self-Portraits

Are these not the best portraits ever?! Students used watercolour paint for their clothes and facial features, soft pastel for their skin colour and torn paper for their hair. 

Scratch it!

Year 1s are learning about the horizon line and the images that are close to it are smaller than images that are further away!

Instead of painting or using textas I thought it was be nice to create our own scratch art. We used oil pastels and acrylic paint. Kids loved it!!!

Year 1 Printing

The year 1s and 2s have been creating collograph prints this term.

We first created a relief by gluing cardboard shapes onto a backing. Then we created a background using food dye and the wet on wet painting technique. Lastly, we PRINTED! Students used foam rollers to roll the printing ink onto their relief and then used their fingers to press the paper onto the relief to create their images.

I love printing... All of the prints are very unique and beautiful!!!

Aboriginal Inspired Art

I teach 1 out of the 5 year 1 classes and we created art that was inspired by some famous paintings done by Aboriginal artists in Australia. Students noticed that dots and vibrant colours are a big feature of Aboriginal art.  First, we drew a picture of an animal found in Australia on black paper. Next, students dipped a wooden stick into acrylic paint and filled in their image with colour. Finally, we created a background using a paint brush and acrylic paint. Year 1s did a great job of carefully placing their dots onto their paper.

This activity was done in Term 3 during circus spendita rehearsals so many students either didn't create an animal or a background. I think the background looks fantastic without an animal on it!

Can You Believe These Were Done by Year 1 and 2?!

This week I had the opportunity to teach classes that I usually do not teach! We were not in the Art Room so we got creative and made a mural full of Minibeasts (creatures found in the garden). Students refined their cutting and pasting skills. Students were challenged to use lots of colours and cut out little details for their creature.
