Year 3 Bas Relief Sculpture

2nd time around with better results!!! Last year I had students do their piece on the theme of "Your favourite things" or  "What do you love". This year I just let students chose whatever image they wanted.

Students layered cardboard onto a larger piece of cardboard (we talked about the importance of careful cutting and having more than 1 layer to create visual interest). This year students used glue sticks to place the tissue paper on their work (last year we used pva and it was super messy). For the final touch, I rubbed the metallic oil pastel over their work (last year kids went oil pastel crazy and when too much oil pastel is unfixable!)

Prep Spring Trees

I thought we would start this term off with something simple and fun. I love any artwork that has to do with trees and spring is here in Melbourne as it was 24 degrees today!

Our magic word was spring trees.

Day 1: Preps used oil pastels for their tree trunk and branches. They used crayons to give their background some texture (they practiced fast colouring). Preps used watercolour paints to fill in their background. I kind of let them go nuts with colours.

Day 2: Preps cut out leaves using various papers. Originally we were only going to create leaves but students suggested we add butterflies, birds, flowers, tree houses and swings. So glad they did!

Year 3 Perspective

For the final piece of the term, students were ask to take all the skills they learned and use them to create one piece of art. During the term students learned about how to create depth and distance in their art and used soft pastels, ink, and watercolour pencils/crayons.

Students planned their piece on a small piece of paper and then used A3 paper for their final piece. Minecraft, ballet, and trees were a common theme in students art. 

Preps go Under the Sea

Preps were inspired by Sea Creatures

Magic word: Cool Colours

Preps explored wax resists, cool colours, oil pastels and acrylic paint all in one go.

Day 1: First we created the coral and then we painted the whole page using cool watercolours. I also added a bit of sneaky salt, which I referred to as "magic" to their work to add some texture.  One prep asked me why I was adding salt and another prep said that it was because there is salt in the sea... CUTE.

Day 2: We drew on our sea creatures and colour or painted them in. Half of the classes created their creatures using oil pastels and texta on cover paper and the other half used acrylic paint and oil pastels.
I found that using acrylic paint for the big sea creatures and oil pastels for "baby" sea creatures was more successful.
