Japanese and Asian Landscapes

This lesson, students learned that images that are closer can overlap images that are further away. As a class, we brainstormed images that were inspired by asian landscapes. Students were experts as they did a passport to Asia activity last year with their classroom teachers. A rule that students had to follow was one image had to show overlapping and one images had to show dark to light towards the horizon line. Students planned out there images on rough copy paper before transferring their images onto the good copy paper. 

We used watercolour pencils. Some students chose to use soft pastels for their background. 

They look pretty impressive hung up in the art room and just in time for Asian Week at our school.

Year 4 Op Art

I was really excited and nervous about doing this lesson as I feared that students would not understand the concept. I must say that students did an amazing job and put forth a lot of effort. We discussed what op art is and looked at some examples and then discussed what artists did to create op art. We learned that using lines, colour, contrast, and patterns are used create the illusion of movement and vibration.

Students had the choice to use fine liners, fat blacks, textas, pencil crayons and or metallic texts. I also gave students a planning sheet and they picked their best idea out of three.

I love how each student added in their own little flavour. Even the year 5s and 6s were amazed and wanted to get in on the action.

Preps go Under the Sea

Preps were inspired by Sea Creatures

Magic word: Cool Colours

Preps explored wax resists, cool colours, oil pastels and acrylic paint all in one go.

Day 1: First we created the coral and then we painted the whole page using cool watercolours. I also added a bit of sneaky salt, which I referred to as "magic" to their work to add some texture.  One prep asked me why I was adding salt and another prep said that it was because there is salt in the sea... CUTE.

Day 2: We drew on our sea creatures and colour or painted them in. Half of the classes created their creatures using oil pastels and texta on cover paper and the other half used acrylic paint and oil pastels.
I found that using acrylic paint for the big sea creatures and oil pastels for "baby" sea creatures was more successful.

Year 5 and 6 Pieces

Students are slowly finishing off their first piece of art. I am pleasantly surprised at how the year 5s are doing. It is the first year that they get to plan and create their own projects. They each get a folio at the beginning of the year and have to plan and design an artwork. I have to approve their plan before they can get creating.
