Preps know Shapes

This week preps learned about shapes! First, I showed Preps a Kandinsky piece and asked them what shapes they saw.

When Preps got their paper they first wrote their names in a shape (tricky for the little guys). Then they filled their page with careful shapes and lines. I was happy to see that some children naturally created patterns with their shapes.

We painted our picture using food dye. We  learned that if we wanted to fill just a small shape with paint we only had to dip the tip of our paint brush in the paint. If students finished early they could practice their cutting and pasting skills by adding small shapes to their work. Some kids even played with glitter.

Lines lines lines

Preps learn about lines. First we drew different types of lines with texta and then we painted with food dye. Preps painted with soft brush stokes and were really good at keeping their brush clean and dragging off any excess water. Not bad for our first project!

We finished our lines off with one sparkly line - kids really do love glitter.

First Week

What a successful first week. Students are busy planning their artworks. Here is just a peak at what we are creating this term.

Also, here are a couple pictures of the art room. Not much has changed from last year. I hope to put a word wall up soon.

Year 3 Weaving

I was going to do weaving this term with students and found a great artblog http://www.newcityarts.blogspot.com/ that had students create a story to base their weave from.

Year 4 Sewing- Students have planned their weave and have made a good copy for tracing.

Year 5 folios- Students are very excited to get started on their own projects. We just have a couple of folio tasks before they begin on their journey.

Gearing up for an exciting new year.

School starts in less than two weeks, which means I am busy finishing up my year overview. Well art is very personalised, I am delving deeper into creating a more personalised learning curriculum which offers students more authentic choices in art. At times I find it difficult and frustrating to come up with lessons that take full advantage of students voice but I am still learning. I am constantly asking myself what do I need to provide my students with that will allow them to take full advantage of their artistic behaviour.

This year I look forward to watching students take ownership of their learning, while they create, explore, problem solve, discover, and most importantly, take risks in art.

I hope you have enjoyed the previous posts from last year. This is my first full year of teaching Art and one of my goals is to document every art lesson that I teach in the Art Room.

What a successful few months it has been! 

I am extremely proud of Elwood Primary students, for creating such wonderful unique pieces of art this year. I cannot wait to teach for the full year next year.

Reduction Prints

Labor of love! So proud of my year 4s for producing such amazing work. Students experimented with colour. We found that black and white ink looked the best for the final print.
