More Year 3 Weaves!

I just couldn't help myself, I had to post more pictures of the Year 3 Weaves. Just lovely! Project explanation is in a previous post.

Year 5 and 6 Art Pieces

I am impressed with the year 5s this year as they have settled in quite nicely with their new personalised learning program. I can really sense that they are proud of what they are working on and are really invested in what they are creating. I look forward to seeing all the wonderful things that they create this year!

*** Year 5 and 6 Program: students have a choice in what they create the art room. Students create their art pieces based on their interests, abilities and experiences. Students are encouraged to take risks in their art and try new techniques and mediums. At the beginning of year 5, each student gets an A3 folio to use to plan out their ideas, sketch, practice with different mediums etc.

Prep Portraits

Last year when Preps created their portraits some didn't quite understand the whole "shoulder up" concept so this year preps could chose to draw themselves from the shoulder up or draw their whole body. Preps used texta and crayon for their portraits and watercolour paint for their backgrounds. I didn't go into detail about how they should draw their face only that they should include eyes, nose, lips and hair. My favourite activity so far!

Year 3 Cardboard Loom Weaving

Year 3s have been busy creating their stunning weaves this term (a projects that I did last year from newcityarts.blogspot.com and fell in love with). 

Students learned that art work can tell  a story and decorative weaves can sometimes communicate an idea or story. Year 3s spent 1 class planning their stories using different colours to represent their ideas (weaving with intent). It took students 5-6 classes to weave their story to the bottom of their cardboard loom. Students then spent 1-2 classes "publishing" their weave (a class term used for good/final copy for writers notebook). 

For reflection, students either answered what their favourite part of weaving was or what they found challenging about weaving. Students enjoyed working on their good copy of their story as well as seeing their colours change during weaving. Some of the things students found challenging were pulling the wool through the weave evenly (weft) and making sure they didn't poke their needle through the black thread (warp). 

Students put heaps of effort into not only their weaves but their final copy of their weave. I am definitely a proud art teacher!

I also showed them how to cease stripes of colour for those who wanted a little challenge.

Prep Shapes

First, we read a cute little story about penguins going on a shape hunt at the beach. We then brainstormed different types of shapes (one child even came up with a semi-cicle). We used black texta to draw our shapes on an A4 piece of paper. Preps focused on drawing "neat" shapes and discovered interesting ways to place their shapes on to their paper (i.e shapes in shapes and shapes on top of shapes). Some Preps even created some lovely shape patterns.  

Preps used watercolour paints to fill their shapes in. We focused on making sure their were no paint puddles.
